Common technical and compatibility questions
What versions of Nuke are supported?

This was compiled and tested in Nuke 16.0v6 and Nuke 17 (Windows). A free download is available on this page (with watermark) to test compatibility with your machine / GPU before purchase. Some tests have shown it can also work in Nuke 15 if "Vectorize CPU" is turned off in the Blink node.

Important! If you bring the node into any version that isn't Nuke 16.0v6, Nuke will automatically recompile the node. This means you will have a loading screen of about 30 seconds to 1 minute - it doesn't mean the software has crashed. To avoid this loading screen in the future, the detailed video shows how.
Is this true 3D?
Yes, this volumetric noise renderer is a full raymarched rendering engine. The noise is generated procedurally, which allows for very quick iteration / playback speed.
How many lights are supported?
Currently one directional light is supported which keeps the tool lightweight and fast.
Is Motion Blur / Defocus supported?

Yes, you can render motion vectors from this toolset, and use Vectorblur which in most scenarios works great. This calculates the motion of the camera as well as the velocity of the noise.

Defocus is not supported inside the node due to the heavy rendering that would be required. Most blurry / foggy volumes in the foreground can be manually defocused and is mostly forgiving in a VFX context. If you need highly targeted shallow defocus, you can split the volume into sections and defocus them separately.

Does this use VDBs?
No. This generates 3D procedural noise, it does not load pre-created VDB files. This tool serves better as a general purpose 3D Volumetric Noise, similar to how we already use 2D Noise.
Do Occlusions support Deep Compositing?

Currently Occlusions support P Data or Z-Depth data. If your shot has noticable motion blur, there are controls in the tool to slice up the volume instead of merging the scene directly inside of the node.

This tool cannot replace Volumetric renders for every shot in a film, such as shots that require deep compositing or detailed holdouts (the same limits that Z-Depth or P-Pass have), but it is useful on a large variety of shots and can reduce turnaround speed that would normally require a separate Houdini artist.

Are updates included?
If we have a small compatibility fix that can be rolled out, we will do our best to update the tool for the future. If we release an entirely new version 2 of the tool in the future, this will likely include an upgrade fee, which supports the development of making tools like this, and continuing to add more advanced features.
